How to write a book with AI, step by step
Updated November 2026
AI can help you write a full book in days instead of months. It can also produce a flat, forgettable book that readers spot in the first page. The difference is almost never the AI. It's the process. This guide walks through the process that works.
1. Start with one clear idea
You don't need a full plan to begin. You need one or two sentences: who the main character is, what they want, and what's in the way. "A minister's daughter answers a marriage ad from a Maine shipbuilder and finds the town has been giving brides to the sea" is enough to build a book on.
2. Build a story bible before you write a word
The most common reason AI books fall apart is that chapter 14 forgets what happened in chapter 3. A story bible fixes that. It's a short document with your characters, their secrets, the setting, the rules of your world and the clues you plan to pay off. Every chapter is written with it in view.
3. Outline every chapter
Give each chapter a title, a two or three sentence summary, and what changes by the end of it. A good outline makes sure every chapter ends on a turn that pulls the reader forward. Edit the outline until you'd want to read that book. It's far easier to fix a story here than after 60,000 words.
4. Choose the voice and style on purpose
Decide the point of view (first person or close third), the tense, the audience and the style. Plain and fast, dark and atmospheric, warm and cozy, witty, lyrical. Naming the style, or giving a few pages of your own writing as a sample, is what stops the book from sounding like every other AI book.
5. Draft one chapter at a time
Long books written in one giant request lose detail and repeat themselves. Write chapter by chapter, with the story bible, the outline and a short summary of earlier chapters in view each time. Read each chapter before moving on.
6. Edit for the things that make AI writing obvious
- Repeated phrases and sentence openings ("She did not", "It was", "for a moment")
- Every paragraph the same length and rhythm
- Characters announcing their feelings instead of showing them
- Tidy summaries at the end of scenes
- Continuity slips: names, dates, places, wounds, objects that change between chapters
A second pair of eyes helps. Authora uses a separate editor AI from a different company to read every chapter cold and flag these problems line by line.
7. Make the cover and the files
For Kindle you need an EPUB and a 1600 x 2560 front cover. For a paperback you need a print-ready interior PDF with the right margins, and a full wrap cover with the spine sized to your page count. See the KDP paperback formatting guide.
8. Publish honestly
Amazon KDP asks whether your book contains AI-generated text or images. Answer truthfully. Readers and Amazon both reward books that are edited, consistent and readable, however they were written.
Questions
Can AI write a whole book?
Yes. With a story bible, a chapter outline and chapter-by-chapter drafting, AI can write a complete novel. It still needs a human to choose the idea, steer the style and read every chapter.
Is it allowed to sell AI-written books on Amazon?
Yes. Amazon KDP accepts AI-generated books but asks you to disclose AI-generated text and images when you publish.
How long does it take to write a book with AI?
A 60,000-word novel can be drafted in a day or two with a tool built for books. Plan extra time to read, edit and fix continuity.
Try it on your own book
Authora plans, writes and edits your book in the style you choose, then makes the cover, the Kindle e-book and the print-ready paperback. The free trial includes 10,000 words, no card needed.
